Paint  Finishes

Painted finishes are truly impressive as nowdays they have found freedom from traditional decorating rules. We can now experiment with paint everywhere - walls, floors, and furniture. You can choose the colors and the finishes you love and combine them with personal belongings to create an environment that is uniquely yours. There are no limits, your personal taste and imagination are the only dictates that count when it comes to decorating your home.

Hundreds of effects can be produced with paint. However most are created by using one or a combination of the four basic finishes that follow : color washing, ragging , sponging, and dragging. An elegant faux marble can be created that is based on the ragging techniques, aged plaster that is based on color washing.

DRAGGING [and combing] technique is created by pulling a dry brush trough a colored glaze revealing the color in fine lines. Nylon scrub brush or dry paintbrush dragged over the wet surface can give impression of silk. Dragging the glaze vertically then horizontally can create a cross-grain as in linens, denims. Dragging in a wavy pattern will give you totally different image.

The silky impression in pastel colors will fit any bedroom or living room, dragging your doors, moldings and trim will highlight the features; it also perfectly works as finish for your furniture.

STRIPES - the simplest method is to paint the stripes with a roller in a second color.

RAGGED STRIPES [see ragging] - apply ragging to the stripes only. Ragging stripes wiil create an elegant and rich look.

SHADOW STRIPES - technique that can be achieved when on the flat latex paint as a base a high-gloss paint in the same color is added. The same "shadow" effect will emerge when applying gloss varnish onto the base.

Stripes can be in alternating colors, or the same color, in alternating colors sheen level that produces a bold, dramatic finish. The widths of the stripe can be consistent or varied.

SMOSHING [bagging - using large plastic bags] is a faux finish that can create a soft leathery look or even marble depending on the color combination of the base color and the glaze color used. It is a process of applying a glaze over a dried base coat and then lying a large plastic bag or plastic film on it. By gently crinkling and shifting plastic film you can create interesting lines and creases the glaze take on after you remove the crinkled plastic.

COLOR WASHING - technique where diluted paint is brushed on loosely living different brush marks and a gradual buildup of color. The diluted paint is so translucent that you can see each coat below.

Wash on color - is created by wiping onto the surface light amount of a paint mixture whereas wash off color you achieve by brushing {rolling} paint mixture onto the surface, and then randomly wiping it off {piece of cloth, plastic film} in sweeping arcs.

Color Wash is perfect for any room but in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways a coat of matte varnish should be applied to the walls for protection.

TRAWELING - faux painting technique where color is smeared boldly onto the dried color base surface creating a striking appearance. When flexible spatula is used instead of the trowel a softer, more blended look will be achieved. Most popular are metallic gold or silver as the finishes that give eye catching reflective dimensions under the remaining layers.
